Samoa Air has announced it will now charge passengers not by the seat but by weight. The smallish airline, which just began operating last year and only flies between Pacific islands, will charge from $1 per kilogram (2.2 pounds) on its shortest flight to $4.15 per kilo on its longest. Its CEO notes that since it uses only small planes, some with as few as 8 seats, it is unable to "average out" a few very heavy passengers per planeload. Each passenger's baggage fee will also be based on weight rather than a standard charge.
Passengers with little baggage, or families with small children, will actually wind up paying less than average. Passengers will have to estimate their weight, with baggage, when buying tickets online, and make up any difference at the airport before boarding.
